Computers have become a necessity in today’s times. People maintain their complete accounts on the computer rather than manually maintaining them in books. People from the advertising world use different software to create beautiful animated advertisements and videos. Teenagers download songs and movies and watch them on their computers or laptops. All this requires space to save all the data. There is an internal hard drive in the computer that saves all the data. However, with the amount of data increasing and being very large in size, an external hard drive has become a necessity. It is a small piece of enclosure which is slightly bigger than the internal hard drive and can store lot of data. It has platters on it that are discs which store data. More the number of platters on it more is the amount of data that can be stored on it. The external hard drive can be connected with the computer with a high-speed interface cable. The interfaces used are USB or FireWire.
The advantages of using an external hard drive are as follows:-
1.) Most importantly, it can be used as a backup to store data that can be easily corrupted by viruses that attack the computer despite installing the best anti-virus software and firewalls. It is always advisable to have a back up of all important official data on an external hard drive. 2.) At times, there is very sensitive and confidential information on the computer which should be accessed only by a few select people. Such data need not be stored on the internal hard drive. It can be stored on different external hard drives and each person who is authorised to access that data can be given an external hard drive. 3.) People like to listen to songs or watch movies on their computers or laptops. This data requires a lot of space and can hence must be stored on an external drive rather than on the internal hard drive. If you are taking a flight, you can watch your favourite movie or listen to songs of your choice by simply plugging in the external hard drive into your computer. 4.) An external drive comes in handy when you go on vacation trips. If you carrying a digital camera, you can click innumerable photographs and then transfer them on your computer. You can then save them on your external hard drive rather than let them occupy too much space of the internal hard drive. You can empty the photographs existing in your digital camera and store them in the external hard drive so that you can keep clicking more photographs. 5.) It is a very small device and can be easily carried with you. If you need to transfer some data from one computer to another or save some songs, movies, etc from your friend’s laptop on to your external hard drive and access them later, it can be easily done. Plus, external hard drives do not make noise while processing data while internal home drives do make some noise.
The above advantages are proof enough to understand that an external hard drive is essential and useful for any computer user.

If you want to keep your data completely safe, you should look into types of data backup that do not require constant power supplies. While discs such as CDs and DVDs are a good way to make a smaller, permanent backup, external hard drives are another great way to back up your data safely. Just make sure that the drives do not stay connected to your computer and on – otherwise they’ll be as at risk as your normal internal drives. You don’t want your backup to be damaged in the same disaster that takes out your computer!
External hard drives are not actually new technology. In fact, these drives work in much the same way as a normal hard drive. Before external drives were affordable, there are some computer users who made external drives by setting internal drives into an outer casing. These worked fairly well, but they did not stand up to being moved around as much.
Over the last several years, external drives have become affordable, small, and easy to use. There are even some compact USB hard drives that can fit in a pocket. How much data can an external hard drive store? Most external hard drives are about the same size as a normal hard disk inside of your computer. In fact, one of the smallest capacities is just 60GB . Repairing Your Hard Drive Using Free Software
Contrary to popular belief, if a computer does not boot due to hard drive corruption all data is not lost and the hard drive may even be repairable. There are 2 types of hard drive damage. One is fixable by you and the other requires a professional data recovery facility.
Physical Drive Damage – Physical damage is the worst. Data recovery can only be done by professionals and can cost up to ,500 (sometimes higher). Physical damage usually consists of bad actuator arms, damaged platters or fried controller cards.
Non-Physical Drive Damage – Non-Physical damage (NPD) is what we’re going to be discussing in this article. NPD occurs when the operating system’s file system (fat or ntfs) gets corrupted due to an improper shutdown (for example). While this damage is may seem really bad (if it’s preventing you from booting your PC), it’s easily fixable with some software that’s already including in any Windows PC and a USB external hard drive enclosure.
Here are a list of items that you’ll need to follow the instructions below:

Find out what kind of hard drive you have. There are 2 types. SATA (small flat connector) and PATA (a.k.a IDE) which has a connector with about 30 pins. An external USB hard drive enclosure with a connector for the type of drive you’re going to be connecting to it (you can grab one of these at BestBuy for about USD).
Please follow the steps below to perform a non-physical repair (software repair) on a non-bootable hard drive.
1. Take the drive out of the computer.
2. Connect the hard drive to the connector on the USB enclosure.
3. Connect a USB cable from the enclosure to the computer that’s working.
4. Power on the USB enclosure.
5. An external drive will probably load in your list of available hard drives. You can see this list by opening “My Computer” or “Computer”. Take note of the drive letter for the external hard drive.
6. Now it’s time to load a program called CHKDSK (Check Disk).
7. Click Start (if you’re on Windows XP) or click the Windows globe (on the bottom left for Vista and Windows 7).
8. On Windows XP click RUN, then type CMD. On Windows Vista and 7 type CMD where it says “Search Programs and Files”. This will open a black command prompt window.
9. In the command prompt type chkdsk “the drive letter you want to check”: /r and press enter. So here is an example chkdsk g: /r then press the enter key.
10. This process can take hours. I’ve had a few that took days.
11. If this command completes successfully your drive should be repaired enough for you to recover the data from it and you might actually be able to boot from it again.
A word of warning. If your drive ever has any errors on it (bad sectors) it’s reached the end of it’s life and should be replaced ASAP. You’ll be able to see this in the report provided to by the chkdsk command at the end of it’s scan.
